DRILLING PRACTICES TRAINING DESCRIPTION

The Drilling Practices course is designed for engineers and field personnel involved in the planning and implementation of drilling programs. The Drilling Practices course covers all aspects of drilling technology, emphasizing both theory and practical application. Drilling is a complex operation requiring the marriage of different technologies and disciplines. Today’s drilling personnel must have a working knowledge of all these disciplines in order to effectively drill a well. The course provides all the fundamentals necessary to drill a well whether it is a shallow well or a complex, high pressure well. Computer programs are used to design many aspects of the modern well and the course will provide the participants with the theory behind most programs along with practical implementation.

Participants will learn how to:

1. Review drilling data and plan the well
2. Incorporate completion plans into the drilling plan
3. Drill a well cost effectively and maximize penetration rate
4. Evaluate stuck pipe problems and avoid potential problems
5. Evaluate and maintain drilling fluids
6. Optimize hole cleaning
7. Design casing, drill string and BOP/wellheads
8. Evaluate and implement cementing programs
9. Design and implement bit and hydraulics programs
10. Incorporate directional drilling and deviation control
11. Recognize and evaluate well control problems

 

DRILLING PRACTICES TRAINING MATERIAL OUTLINE

1. Planning including requirements for the completion and testing, AFE preparation
2. HSE at the rig site
3. Cost control, evaluating alternative drilling methods and maximizing penetration rate
4. Hole cleaning, sloughing shale, lost circulation, stuck pipe and fishing operations
5. Drilling fluids
6. Lifting capacity of drilling fluids, pressure losses in the circulating system and ECD
7. Maximizing hydraulics in the planning phase and at the rig
8. Bit selection and application
9. Casing and drill string design, selection of casing seats, BOP equipment
10. Cement, cement additives and displacement mechanics
11. Deviation control, directional drilling and horizontal drilling
12. Pressure control, routine and special problems
13. Project post analysis
