Legal Origin Verification Training Description

The Rainforest Alliance’s legality verification standards verify the legality of the wood at the forest level and ensures the traceability of legal timber at all points in the supply chain (Chain of Custody).

The Rainforest Alliance originally developed its legality verification program as a progressive, two-tiered system in which companies began with Verification of Legal Origin (VLO) and moved to Verification of Legal Compliance (VLC).

Verification of Legal Origin (VLO) verifies that timber comes from a source that the harvester has a documented legal right to harvest, pursuant to the laws and regulations of the government of the jurisdiction. Suppliers of VLO timber must follow and maintain documented chain-of-custody systems.

 

Legal Origin Verification Training Objective

After attending this training participants are expected to be able to  verify the legality of tropical rain forests.

 

Legal Origin Verification Training Contents

1. Assessment of key staff qualifications and training for the system of VLO of timber
2. Procedures for timber suppliers’ control prior to conclusion of the supply agreement
3. Procedures for verifying incoming timber and accompanying documentation for the legal status
4. Procedures of handling and dealing with uncontrolled timber
5. Procedures of calculating the conversion factors during production of the final product
6. Procedures of maintenance and updating of production and sales volumes
